STOP USING VEGETABLE OILS

People sometimes think that vegetable oils like soybean, sunflower, safflower, canola, and corn are healthier than butter. But unfortunately, they’re all bad for you.

Vegetable oils are highly processed foods (and you already know how bad those are for you), and they contain high amounts of omega-6 fatty acids, which cause inflammation in the body. The more omega-6 foods you eat, the more inflammation you’ll create, which could lead to diseases like heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and depression. They’re also loaded with trans-fat, which has also been associated with chronic disease.

If you want to be truly healthy from the inside out, you’ll make a complete break with vegetable oils. If you must use oils, many nutrition experts say using extra-virgin cold-pressed olive oil, even better if it’s organic, is okay. But if you want to be truly healthy from the inside out, you’ll make a complete break with vegetable oils.

Surprisingly, cooking and baking without oil is easier than you think. To cook without oil when stir-frying or sautéing, use nonstick cookware and replace oil with water or vegetable broth, adding a few tablespoons at a time and stirring frequently so your food doesn’t burn. Want to swap out oil in baked goods? Try mashed bananas or unsweetened applesauce.

TIGHTEN YOUR PORES WITH ARTICHOKES

It’s true: the pores on your face really do get bigger as you age. Blame the breakdown of collagen and elastin in your skin and the downward pull of gravity for causing pores to stretch open, something that can happen as early as your twenties. Those pores then look bigger, which can make you look older. One survey found that almost 75 percent of women reported looking younger with smaller pores.

Here’s a food hack that can help, though: artichokes. They contain a compound called cynaropicrin, which minimizes the appearance of pores. You can eat them if you like, but you can also put them right on your skin. Make a mask with either a well-cooked artichoke hearts or a can of artichoke hearts in water. Mash the artichokes first and then combine 2 teaspoons of olive oil and 1 teaspoon of fresh lemon juice or vinegar. Stir until you have a paste and then apply to your face and skin, letting it sit for ten to fifteen minutes. Rinse first with warm water and then cold water to really tighten those pores.
